Columbus, OH might not be a fast, restless city like many throughout the U.S., but that doesn’t mean there’s little to see around here. On the contrary, you’ll find that Columbus’ more relaxed attitude helps it keep a charming air to it despite being pretty big. This also means that you won’t have a hard time finding ways to spend some quality time with your family thanks to the many family and children-oriented events that sprout up everywhere around the summer, most of which combine learning experiences with some good, clean fun.
We’d like to help you get to know and love this city as much as we do, so we’ve made a list. The following are all recurring events that will be happening around Columbus over the summer (some of them are even things you could do this weekend in Columbus!), some of them extending to August or September, and each of them perfect for spending a nice family evening (or night) together. Let’s see what Columbus has in store for you this summer!
This great exhibition takes a look at puppeteer and educator Jim Henson’s work for television and movies, and the way his dreams to teach children about the world around them through entertainment completely changed the face of popular culture of the 20th century. Located at COSI Columbia, and held from May 25 all the way through September 2, this comprehensive display will tell you how Henson and his team of puppeteers, writers, and many others gave life not only to The Muppet Show and Sesame Street but also to Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and much more.
Watch as hundreds of newly emerged butterflies take flight in the Pacific Water Garden from the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Garden every single day during educational presentations held at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. While you wait for the butterflies to be release, stick around and experience the conservatory itself, which houses premier botanical collections and gardens, seasonal art and nature exhibitions, and plenty of educational opportunities for children to learn a little more about nature and its relation to art. The beauty of the gardens alone is worth a visit, just be advised that tickets range from $12 to $18, depending on age.
Every Friday from June to August, the Columbus Commons host a free weekly event dedicated entirely for kids. There are many events all around the commons for them to enjoy, including inflatables, group activities and games, carousels, and even some workshops where they’ll be able to explore their creative side by learning some crafts. The place really couldn’t be better suited for it, either; the Columbus Commons are a six-acre park located in the heart of downtown and is already a family fun center in Columbus, Ohio. The Commons for Kids is just one of the hundreds of programs and events that it holds each year. It’s a place where you can still feel the cohesiveness of the community that surrounds it.
Love watching movies as much as spending a warm summer night under the stars with your family? Then the Movies by Moonlight event held every Tuesday from June 4th to August 27th is what you’re looking for if you’re around Columbus, OH. Grab a blanket or a comfortable pair of camping chairs, bring a bucket of popcorn and all your favorite snacks, then enjoy a couple of family feature classics. You’ll have to check the listings in their site when available to know precisely what their screening program is going to be, but we can assure you that they’re all appropriate for children.
If you or your kids have never experienced what an authentic county fair is, then come around to the Pickaway County Ag & Event Center in Circleville, OH (just 25 miles south of Columbus) starting on June 15 for the Pickaway County Fair, which has been part of the county’s heritage since 1945. A classic for sure, but you’re also in luck if you choose to go in 2019 since the fair is starting a new chapter of its history by introducing new buildings, structures, and a few still-undisclosed plans for their visitors. If you want some salt-of-the-earth family entertainment during the summer, a county fair is a perfect place, because young and old alike will find something fun to see or do.
Finding cool family events for the summer in Columbus is not hard at all; the hard part is fitting all of them into your schedule!
